Holiday Decorating Tips

I just love home decor. I would like to share with you some of my tricks and pieces I'm currently loving.  If you've noticed from my instagram, I have been sharing some of my holiday designs and you seem to really enjoy them. Today, I'll go in to detail on how I like to decorate for the holidays and I hope to give you some inspiration below.

Simple is more

Instead of going for a busy display, I tend to like simple and chic holiday decorations.  Sometimes when there's too much going on with your decor, you don't quite know what to look at.  I love going with a similar color scheme with my decor. As you see above, here are some cute pieces I picked up at TJ Maxx. I love the color blue and it goes with the colors I have in my home.

Outdoor lights made easy

Living where we do, we tend to get high winds and so much snow! That can really take a hit on many an outdoor displays. We've tried stringing up lights, but but then it would be power cord city (I was so worried I would trip our mail man).  We then tried the projector lights and those worked out until last year when we got a few feet -- that's right, I said feet -- of snow and then they were buried and we had trouble finding them. Enter the battery powered pixie lights I found on Amazon. I just love these so much! They are easy to hang up since they have a built-in wire attached. They have eight settings and an auto function that will shut off and turn on at the same time everyday.  I also strung these up in our basement to display my son's artwork.

Decor that will become a tradition

This year, I decided to purchase an Advent calendar for our son as a cute and fun way to count the days until Christmas.  And of course I found it at target.  It has the cutest little hat to change the days and I can see myself putting a fun treat or note in there about what I love about him in the years to come.

The tree should be full of memories

Something my husband and I started since we first got married is that each year we give each other an ornament and we also get an ornament when we go on vacation or visit another country. This has turned our simple little "hand me down" Christmas tree into a memory tree. We also have it full of ornaments that our parents handed down to us from when we were little ones. Every time we decorate the tree, we reminisce of the amazing times we have shared together and fantasize of what is to come.

Front Porch cure for winter blues

This is something I am doing different this year for the holidays and throughout winter. I'm planing on keeping my front porch furniture and decor out. One of my favorite things to do is sit outside with my hot tea and a book or my computer. My husband always teases me and calls me grandma because of this. I figure even though it's cold, on a 30 to 40 degree day it may do me some good to sit on my front porch and enjoy the outdoors. I've chosen some cute pieces to compliment this space.

I hope you feel inspired and enjoy yourself this holiday season. Remember that this is a time for family and friends. The world seems to spin faster and faster every year and I hope you have a moment to sit still and and just be. Merry Christmas my dear friends!
