Confessions of a Boss: What it really feels like to be in charge
I would like to give you my honest opinion of what it feels like to be head cheese. My husband and I currently own our own restaurant and we're responsible for over 100 employees. When I was first starting out in the business world, I knew that I wanted to be in charge. Once I was, things were going to be different. Here are some fun truths about being the boss.
What does it feel like to have the power? It feels like Spiderman without all the fun swinging. You feel a great sense of responsibility because you have many people that count on you to make the right decisions.
Is firing fun? Nope, it's easily the worst part of the job. Though "Trump" turned it into a show, it's far from it. Because no mater how many times you say business is business and you need to separate your emotions, these are real people. You know that this is a major event that will change their life.
Amazing social calendar? When you are the one in charge most of the time you don't get invited to go out with "the group". Think about it. Is your boss really the person you want to cut loose with?
Why are you always so "on"? Most of the time you feel like you're under a microscope and you have to watch your every move. People will lead by your example and nobody is perfect. Sometimes you will have broccoli in your teeth and most of the time no one will tell you.
Do you like bosses day? No, it seems so silly! Why do we need a day? I feel like "Hallmark" is slowly taking over the world one card at a time.
Do you like to be told no? I never liked to be told no which is why I have worked so hard in my profession. I always had the notion that I would figure out all the answers to people's questions and make it very very hard for anyone to say no to me.
Do you care for your employees? Very much so. I truly enjoy everyone and it's great motivation to do the right thing. We want them to succeed and be happy in their career.
What is a boss you look up to? For me it is Michael Scott and Queen B. I do work hard to bring some fun into a stressful work environment. Since we work in the service industry, you learn quickly that some people just suck. Queen B. because of her strong work ethic and ability to evolve with the changing time.
What is something that would surprise your employees about you? I think the fact that I have a tattoo. I figure I kinda don't look like I've got ink.
Any advice for your fellow bosses out there? Always do the right thing for your people. Be honest with your employees. Don't blame them when something goes wrong, at the end of the day, the fault lies with you. Also, take the necessary time to get to know your employees and recognize them for their accomplishments, personal and work. Knowing what makes them tick will only make you a better leader and motivator.
Excellent job telling it like it is.
